Serial Space Suitcase Market

Serial Space in Chippendale have called for all hoarders (and collectors) who have a couple of suitcases worth of old treasure they want to pass on to drag it down to the Suitcase Market this Saturday for Sydney to come buy, buy, buy. Vintage records, costume jewels, old furs your nanna used to wear, homemade cookies and jams, books and bric-a-brac will be waiting patiently to be taken to a new home. We like to think of this as a cheap and chic version of the Finders Keepers market. You still find, and you still keep, but there are no trestle tables, no clothes racks and no overpriced ceramics, this is just an honest-to-goodness jumble sale, with baked goods on the side! It's a waaaay better idea than laying out all your stuff on your front lawn and hoping someone waltzes by and throws some cash at you. WHEN: Saturday, 17 March TIME: 10am-4pm (Vendors set-up from 9am) WHERE: Serial Space, 33 Wellington St, Chippendale

Odd Future Pop-Up Store

A few photos from Angie Osman of the Odd Future pop-up store that rolled into Oxford Street last week with much fanfare from 14 year old suburban children. How things can change for an artist in a year, right? Check her Tumblr here: http://takingbestguesses.tumblr.com

The Armchair Collective – Mona Vale

So you've gone to all that trouble securing a lunch date at The Armchair Collective, The Boat House at Palm Beach's non-identical twin located a few beaches south in Mona Vale, only to discover that no, your date won't sit and chat. While you wait for your beef burger with house-made pickles, Swiss cheese and mustard aioli, or your char grilled Balmain bug salad with coriander and lime dressing, they're off fawning over homewares. Mint-green covered armchairs and burnt-orange striped lamp shades to be exact. There are blown-glass vases, beachy cushions and tea sets by the dozen. Vintage bar stools sit by serving platters and beside baskets of blankets and woven rugs, it'll be a wonder if they make it back to your table in time for lunch at all. However we have a hunch that they will, because if they get too swept up in the whirlwind of glossy-magazine standard domesticity, they might miss out on a hearty Ploughman's Lunch of shaved leg ham, stuffed zucchini flowers, heirloom tomatoes, aged cheddar and shaved fennel salad. Or the milkshakes that come thick and syrupy in giant glass milk bottles. You'll both stay seated for a bucket of thick, fluffy, hand-cut chips with harissa mayonnaise, and a glass of wine, because you're out of the city and no one cares a damn. Breakfast shows its face in the form of thick-cut miche toast spread with labne, leg ham, a poached egg and cherry tomatoes that burst at the slightest nudge of a fork. A bowl of fruit salad with figs and berries comes with a side of drippy honeycomb and the coffee is spot on. This is Mona Vale, and there is white sand and a cool sea waiting only a quick dash away. Armchairs and burgers? We could get used to this. The Armchair Collective 9a Darley St East, Mona Vale www.thearmchair.com.au (02) 9999 2871 Open: Mon-Fri 10am - 6pm Sat-Sun 10.30am - 4,30pm Sophie McComas www.twitter.com/sophmccomas

Ds Vs Terry Barber

In the whirlwind of fashion week, we caught up with M.A.C 's jet-setting UK Director of Makeup Artistry - industry legend Terry Barber!Having worked on the most famous of celeb icons from Grace Jones, Pamela Anderson to Dita Von Teese & Beyonce, his deft hand was behind this season's key looks on the runway. Here, he answers some pressing questions from DS - read them and put your best face forward this winter. Are Sydney girls wearing too much makeup? While it's easy to say yes from the heavy painterly faces of the fashion crowd, Terry loves the natural " I didn't drink myself silly" look of a well rested face. In all instances, resist the urge to cake it on ladies. "Sydney girls seem to like well conditioned skin with a glow - transparent skin is modern skin!"  What's something new we can experiment with at home?"I really enjoyed the make up that Nicole Thompson created at the Kirrilly Johnston show.  It was a new use of hot, spicy neutrals - a terracotta wash around the eyes and a full paprika toned lip and everything done with a gorgeous creamy texture. This look was all about brown being sexy again". Tell us the truth, are false lashes too much for the office? "No they should be trimmed to the eye, not too theatrical but a very 60's inspired chunky black lash against a nude polished face - this is one of the hot new trends.  Lose the eyeshadow in favor of a major lash - think Julie Christie in the 60's". Visualise Adele's latest video clip and go for it!And remember Sydney ladies, the BACK-TO M.A.C recycling campaign is still going strong!6 empty M.A.C containers = 1 new free lippie for you!Visit the M.A.C mothership at...276 Oxford StreetPaddington NSW 2021(02) 9360 8581 - Sunita Patradoon Ho@yosunita

The Mup Opening Night

T-shirt labels are a dime a dozen so discovering a brand that combines what is otherwise mundane with incredible design (both fashion and graphic) is cause to jump around. The MUP is a label that explores the everyday, extracting the extraordinary and drawing on it as inspiration. The end result is an exciting combination of creative expression and timelessness – both in design as well as the sentiment felt by the wearer.Made up of Sydney born and bred duo Pike and Harrison, The MUP’s latest range SILENIT etc LINGUA’ (which translates to ‘THE DEAD LANGUAGE’) explores concepts of beauty, death and fear personified through insect graphics. The images create a story – a world where human fears of irrational things become owned by the insects, in order to bring the audience closer to the natural world. If you’re keen to pick up a few pieces or an art print of the graphics, swing by the SILENTI etc LINGUA range launch tonight. The MUP Opening NightThe Grand Social project store, Edition, 214 Crown St Darlinghurst.LMH

Ds @ Rafw

Guest post by Sunita Patradoon Ho - who gallantly ducked and weaved around the Sydney to cover RAFW for usFollow her adventures/ramblings at www.twitter.com/yosunitaIt’s taken me a full week to recover from the queues, listless waiting around, shows, afterparties, tortured feet and pre- breakfast boozing of Rosemount Australian Fashion Week to bring you this wrap up of key trends from over 60 individual shows. With a focus on online connectivity and more international & domestic bloggers invited than ever, it was hard to miss the 24 hour coverage and hash tag #RAFW clogging everyone’s twitter stream. From first hand accounts of designers & stylists tweeting back stage snaps of intricate braids and off duty models, to instant sideline updates as the clothes roll out onto the runway. Fashion week this year was more connected than it’s ever been. What other event in town engages a full time ‘Twitter Wall’ in the main foyer broadcasting live tweets surrounding the event?Magdalena Valevska Sara PhillipsMiss UkonHere's a break down of some key trends I saw at this year's event... Leather anything... even short- shorts! Why not! Wear it any way you can especially encouraged when partnered with super luxe silks & chiffon. Neon - No longer the domain of your little brother’s festival going friends, it’s time to embrace the 90s, again. Seen many times over was hot pink toned back with creamy neutrals – convincingly very grown up.Burnt Orange - You say ‘Tangerine’, I say ‘Copper’ either way, it was spotted on everything from red carpet Carl Kapp gowns to crocheted bikinis and all in one pant suits.Animal print – RAWR! ‘Chinese Mafia Wife’ is a covetable look and unexpectedly versatile for everyone. Animal print and chunky gold? Do it, if there’s ever a time to embrace your inner jersey shore…White - What can be more crisp than white? White on white. Finally, you can don a white blazer and look less Celine Dion / Kath Day Knight … and more, inner city fashion editor-y.Colour Blocking - Throw totally random colours together in a thoroughly considered way.Lace – In the words of a 90s icon Brenda Dickson “ Leather & lace… my two favourite textures”.Pastels & neutrals – Consider all the neglected shades in between like blush, pewter, soft pinks, slate and the all-encompassing family of ‘nudes’.Folk Craft – Embroidery, crochet, hand dyed, custom beaded, rope.More profiles on RAFW designers from Sunita over coming days...
