Chris Doyle x The Jezabels

An interesting collaboration between internationally acclaimed photographer and graphic designer Christopher Doyle and local wunderkind The Jezabels will take residence at Mart Gallery from Thursday evening. Chris has been creating The Jezabels' otherwordly, abstract artwork since the very beginning. This exhibition collects all the pieces together, along with unseen and test works. Sam from The Jezabels: “Chris is so important to us. With our releases, he has repeatedly been able to understand the underlying message of our music, as well as our somewhat strange musical aesthetic. He has time and time again come up with beautiful, surreal, sublime and uncanny visual translations of the music we make. We talk about this between ourselves in the band - the way that Chris has helped us define what we do." WHAT: The Jezabels @ Mart Gallery WHERE: 156 Commonwealth Street, Surry Hills, NSW 2010 WHEN: Thursday Dec 8th - 14th Dec, 12:00pm-5:00pm Daily HOW MUCH: FREE

Trout Mask Replica – Replica @ Kind Of

The surreal experimental sounds of the muscial genius Don Van Vliet AKA Captain Beefheart, and his Magic Band have been brought to colourful life through the paintings and drawings by Aoife Milson in her exhibition Trout Mask Replica - Replica opening at Kind Of Gallery this Thursday night.Listening soley to the music of Beefheart while she worked, and titled in homage to his epic album 'Trout Mask Replica', Milson's artworks encapsulate the inspirational conversation between two creatives. She has visualised the fusion of jazz, blues and psychedelia of Beefheart's music through weird and compelling images in 'a reaction to Beefheart in all his Glory' - like this... The exhibition delivers a very personal insight into the relationship between two artists and how two mediums can become indelibly linked as one inspires the other. A rare experience not to be missed.Check out Beefheart and his Magic Band live at Cannes in 1968 here. What: Trout Mask Replica - ReplicaWhere: Kind Of Gallery, 72 Oxford Street, DarlinghurstWhen: Opening Night - Thursday 25 October 7pm - 9pm Exhibition runs 25 Oct - 6 Nov (Thurs - Sun 12-6pm)Link: http://kindofgallery.com/Liz de Fegely: liz_defegely@hotmail.com

Guinness Live Thursdays

As if St. Patrick’s Day wasn’t enough of a marathon in itself, requiring at least a year to get over, there is a new day on the Irish (and therefore International) calendar in which we must give thanks for drinking Guinness, by drinking Guinness. Makes sense, more sense than ‘celebrating’ St. Patricks day anyway. The day in question is in fact Arthur’s Day. The day in which old Arthur Guinness signed a 9000 year lease on the St. James gate brewery in Dub-Town (Dublin). As part of these celebrations, Guinness has decided to share the love with an international music contest that will culminate in an all out festival in Dublin. Supporting local music talent, Guinness Live Thursdays have been separating the men from the boys and we’re now down to the semi-finals. Head down to PJ O’Briens on King Street this Thursday to watch Iron Bar Hotel take on Tortured Willow as voted by Guinness Australia Facebook fans. If you're further out of town, head to PJ Gallagher's Parramatta to catch Luke Dickens Band take on a yet to be decided wild card entry. Winners will be decided by judges and fan votes, with the 4 best bands heading to Sydney to compete at The Gaelic Theatre. The winner of the final, heads to to Dublin to represent Australia at the Arthur’s Day celebrations. You can get involved through the Facebook page, follow and vote for the bands and help some awesome local talent earn a spot on stage in Dublin and quite obviously an education in how real (Irish) men drink Guinness. The finals kick off this Thursday 8th September with two free gigs in Sydney:Iron Bar Hotel vs Tortured Willow – at PJ O’Brien’s King Street, SydneyLuke Dickens Band vs a wildcard finalist – at PJ Gallagher’s ParramattaDiscover all the artists and vote for your personal favourite at www.Facebook.com/GuinnessAustralia.
